Traditionally one of the strongest divisions in football, the NFC East teams this year have posted a combined record of 5-14. This does not reflect well on the teams, but it does mean that that the division is still wide open.
This makes our Setanta Sports NFC East duel between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins an important game as it is a chance for each team to make its mark on the division.
A team fancied to build on last year’s success, the Redskins have stuttered in the opening weeks. Their star quarterback, Robert Griffin III, does not look like the same player after having off-season surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
The Cowboys are a team loaded with talent, but never seem to be able to win games when it matters the most.
Last week, the Cowboys matched the Peyton Manning-lead Broncos score for score, but Romo, being Romo, threw an interception at the end of the game to allow the Broncos take a 51-48 victory.
The Redskins are coming off a bye-week so they should be well rested for this game.
With the Cowboys having a mediocre record at home, and after suffering a heart-breaking defeat last week, the Redskins should earn their second win of the season on Sunday night.
Ahead of our Setanta Sports sponsored clash, Fantasy5Live’s NFL expert @irishjet has picked his 5 players to watch:
Tony Romo, Quarterback, Cowboys
Romo’s reputation for choking in big games is well deserved, and it was further cemented last week when he gifted the Broncos a field goal in the last minute, costing his team the game. Whatever the critics say about Romo, he is an excellent fantasy quarterback. His amazing stat line of 506 yards passing and 5 touchdowns will not be repeated this weekend, but Romo is still the top pick in this week’s game.
Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver, Cowboys
Romo’s favourite target has come into his own this season, posting 423 yards and 6 TDs in 5 games. Bryant has benefited from Jason Garrett’s pass-happy play calling especially in the redzone, where he seems to be the first option.
The tendency of defences to double-cover Bryant is a concern, and the Redskins have been strong against the pass, but even the top rated Broncos’ defence couldn’t keep Bryant quiet last week.
Demarco Murray, Running Back, Cowboys
The injury-prone Murray has finally put a run of games together, but hasn’t put up the monster numbers that one would expect in an offence that scores regularly.
This is mainly due to Jason Garrett giving Murray limited carries, but also because Murray has struggled to break tackles. However, the Redskins are second last in run defence this year which means that Murray should have a successful day.
Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Redskins
As mentioned, RGIII’s play this year has been poor, and it looks like he has been second-guessing the strength of his knee by not stepping into his throws. That said, he has put up some big passing numbers in his four games so far.
This is partly due to the fact that the Redskins have been coming from behind a lot, but also because Kyle Shanahan, the Redskins offensive coordinator, calls many short passes and receiver screens, relying on yards after the catch.
The lack of designed runs have hurt his fantasy numbers this year, but with a week’s rest and facing a tired Cowboys defence, RGIII should put in a good performance.
Alfred Morris, Running Back, Redskins
The Cowboys are very strong against the pass, so the Redskins would be wise to lean on the run by giving Morris the ball.
Morris has been a major fantasy disappointment this year, but the Cowboys defence are 29th against the run so far this season. Morris is nursing some sore ribs but should get a full complement of carries on Sunday.
